Adelphi Distillery Ltd, owned by Donald Houston and Keith Falconer, is a prominent player in the world of whisky. While headquartered in Charlestown, Fife, the company's roots run deep into the Scottish Highlands, with Donald Houston holding the title of laird of the Ardnamurchan Estate. It's on this historic land that Adelphi established its own distillery.
Adelphi is renowned for its specialization in single cask bottlings, priding itself on offering whisky in its purest form – unadulterated by chill-filtration or artificial color additives. Notably, Adelphi transitioned into distilling as well as bottling. In 2014, they opened the Ardnamurchan distillery, with a production capacity of up to 450,000 liters of spirit per year. This distillery not only contributes to their own expressions but also fuels reciprocal trading.
The story of Adelphi traces back to 1825 when the original Adelphi distillery was established in Glasgow's Gorbals district by brothers Charles and David Gray. The distillery was later renamed Loch Katrine Adelphi after adopting water from Loch Katrine in the 1860s. In 1870, the change in name became official. Ownership changed hands in the 1880s when A Walker & Co took charge. However, distillation ceased in the early 1900s when the Distillers Company Ltd acquired the distillery in 1902.
In 1993, Jamie Walker, the great-grandson of former distillery owner Archibald Walker, revived the Adelphi name as an independent bottling operation. The company continued its legacy under the leadership of Keith Falconer and Donald Houston, who acquired it in 2004. Alex Bruce, a descendent of whisky legend Andrew Usher, joined on as Managing Director as well.
Since then, Adelphi has been celebrated for its exceptional single cask releases and further solidified its presence with the establishment of the Ardnamurchan distillery in 2014. Their journey continues to be marked by excellence and innovation in the whisky industry.
