Wolfburn Distillery, situated in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland, boasts a rich history dating back to 1821 when it was founded by William Smith. This distillery, named after the nearby Wolf Burn stream, thrived for decades under the Smith family's ownership and became a significant malt whisky producer in Caithness. However, production ceased, and the original distillery gradually fell into ruins, its exact demise shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, historical records reveal impressive annual whisky production volumes, with 28,056 "Total Gallons of Proof Spirit" produced in 1826, making it the largest distillery in Caithness at the time.
In 2013, a new chapter for Wolfburn began when a private consortium gained approval to build a new distillery near the original site. This revitalized Wolfburn Distillery, located just 350 meters from the original, draws its water from the Wolf Burn, preserving the historical connection. The modern facility comprises the distillery itself and three warehouses for aging casks.
In February 2016, Wolfburn Distillery commenced bottling operations in a purpose-built facility on-site. Their inaugural whisky, launched in March 2016, quickly gained recognition, winning multiple gold medals in international competitions. Today, Wolfburn continues to craft its whisky with a commitment to quality reminiscent of its 19th-century origins.
