Longmorn distillery, established in 1893 by whisky entrepreneur John Duff, is a renowned name in the world of Scotch whisky. Situated near Elgin, this distillery was founded alongside its sister distillery, Benriach. Although John Duff's initial foray into the whisky industry faced challenges, he eventually sold Longmorn to James Grant in 1899. Despite its turbulent beginnings, Longmorn quickly gained recognition for producing exceptional malt whisky, becoming a prized ingredient in various blends, including VAT 69 and Dewar's.
In 1920, a significant moment in Longmorn's history occurred when Masataka Taketsuru, a pioneer of Japanese whisky and the founder of Nikka, briefly worked at the distillery. It's said that Nikka's stills were modeled after those at Longmorn.
The distillery continued to evolve and, in 1970, merged with The Glenlivet & Glen Grant Distilleries Ltd to create The Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd. Subsequently, Seagram acquired the company in 1977, and it is now part of Chivas Brothers, a subsidiary of Pernod Ricard.
Longmorn single malt became available to the public with the release of a 15-year-old expression in 1993. Despite the expansion of its production, much of Longmorn's output is reserved for blending purposes, including a single-cask offering as part of Chivas Brothers' Cask Strength series. Nevertheless, Longmorn has garnered a devoted following, particularly in Japan, and is regularly featured in independent bottlings.
