Glengyle Distillery, situated in Campbeltown, Scotland, has a captivating history dating back to its original distillery's establishment in 1872 by William Mitchell. Despite facing numerous challenges, including ownership changes and its closure of the original plant in 1925, Glengyle found a new lease on life in the 21st century under the leadership of Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd., a company associated with Springbank Distillery. In 2000, J&A Mitchell, the owners of Springbank (led by its chairman Hedley Wright and distillery manager Frank McHardy) breathed new life into Glengyle, which resumed operations in 2004.
Due to trademark issues, the whisky produced at Glengyle is bottled under the name "Kilkerran." The distillery's first release occurred in 2007. Glengyle's distinctive approach to whisky production involves a semi-lauter mash tun and a unique fermentation process in boatskin larch washbacks. The distillation takes place in stills originally crafted for the Ben Wyvis distillery, with custom modifications resulting in a light and fragrant style.
