Ardbeg, a renowned Islay distillery founded in 1815 by the McDougall family, has a storied history. It thrived in the 19th century due to the demand for smoky blends but faced challenges during economic downturns. Ownership changed hands, with Hiram Walker taking control in 1979. A rise in demand for peated whisky led to increased production in the 1960s and 1970s.

However, in 1981, the distillery was mothballed, and it intermittently operated until Glenmorangie acquired it in 1997. Glenmorangie aimed to rebuild the brand's reputation, invested in a visitor center, and gradually released expressions, including the iconic Ardbeg 10-year-old. Today, Ardbeg offers a range of expressions, maintaining its reputation as a cult single malt.
